Gear up for All-Hallows Eve

October 25th, 2011

So get out and enjoy this terrific October weather. I love the Autumn season more then any other! Great hayrides to the pumpkin patch are available at places like Harvest Hill Farms on route 26 in Mechanic Falls, Maine along with their Haunted Nightly Hayrides,  or head over to Cranmore Ski Report in North Conway and hop on board the chairlft to the top of the mountain for their “Haunted Ghoullog”-worth the trip. Slow and Steady wins Championships

October 25th, 2011

That’s kind of how Carl Edwards is going about the task of winning his first Sprint Cup Championship by making sure he stays out of trouble and is somewhere within eyesight of the leaders when the race ends. In the first six races of the “Chase” Carl has finished in the top three, five and ten in all but last Sunday’s at ‘Dega where he finished a respectable 11th and increased his points lead. He is on track to be the first champion since Matt Kenseth in 2003 to capture the title with just a single win! JW

Losing an outstanding human being!

October 19th, 2011

The loss of Dan Wheldon is much deeper then simply saying it’s a part of the sport and so every driver accepts the risk..I interviewed Dan three years ago and he immediately impressed me with his infectious enthusiasm and the fact that he actually seemed to be inetrested in talking to Bill and I.

His love of the sport, his integrity in a world of diminishing integrity in sports in general, and his history of caring for causes and being a role model for youth, will be greatly missed, perhaps as much as the extraordinary talent that he was! JW

I love apples, just about every kind and this coming Sunday, September 11, it’s Apple Sunday across Maine with orchards  featuring special events & activities for the entire family. Go for it! You can find lots of info about orchards all over maine  at www.maineapples.org!

Hey all of you Fly Fishermen & Fly Fisherwomen, you can still sign on for the 4th Annual Upper Andro Two-Fly Tournament on September 16th. Go to the website for information but I have to say that this is a great event and helps support the continuing effort of many dedicated individuals in making the Androscoggin one of the best fisheries in the state! I’ve competed every year ith my Grandson Tyler, who won the inaugural tournament with a nice 2 pund, 19 inch Brown Trout! look forward to seeing you there! JW

Fall is nearly here and that means the best of Everything!

August 30th, 2011

Destinations are everywhere..geat Fall fishing at Grants camps & as soon as October arrives, it’s Cast & Blast for Trout, Salmon & Birds! And I love white water rafting in the fall..it’s cooler and exhilerating and you cannot beat the spectacular colors, so head north to the Forks & Northern Outdoors!

Did I mention the fairs, including the Oxford County Fair, the Common Ground Fair, the Fryeburg Fair and then coming up on the 15th through the 17th of September, I haul out my considerable Scottish roots, grab my Irish honey and head for the Highland Games at Loon Mountain in Lincoln, NH!

The Chase Heats up!

August 30th, 2011

Hey fans..do you think that Junior and T-Stew will make the top 10? With no wins and just two races to go, I’m thinking that Brad Keselowski will overtake at least one of them!

It would appear that the Timing Lines on Pit Road at Bristol prevented Gordon from easily winning that race..and yes I’m going with Gordon for the rest of the year! Listen to my show every Friday on 96.3, The Big Jab! We’re on Facebook too! JW

The Indy cars are back in Northern New England!

August 15th, 2011

Hey fans..spent the weekend at Louden and the “Magic Mile”..Sunday’s IZOD movethatblock.com Indy 225 was terrific, but the rain caused quite a conroversy at the end..Ryan Hunter Reay declared the winner..he was leading when race officials tried a green flag restart on lap 215 but the surface was too wet and Danica collected four other cars when she spun out in the beginning!

The controversy surrounded the decision by race officals to revert to the order of running at the failed re-start..Oriol Servia and Scott Dixon both passed  Reay but were shuffled back after the decision..they were not happy!

Ed Carpenter who was on my show “In The Pits” Friday said to me afterwards that the officials should never have started the race in the rain..they all just crashed! What do you think?
